May 2022: Check Out These New Activities on Sandra Markle's blog!
May 9 Lost Sock Day It’s always a mystery! Where do lost socks go? Sounds like a story starter to me. A good matching activities is I Lost My Sock! A Matching Mystery by P.J. Roberts (Abrams Appleseed) Then transform those “left behind socks” into sock puppets! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yn_pzsdhAY May 13 Frog Jumping Day: I have to share my book Hip Pocket Papa (Charlesbridge) One of the things I loved about telling this frog’s story was that it let me take readers with me to experience the world from this frog’s point of view—which is keeping its tadpoles safe from drought and predators on the forest floor when it’s as-tiny-as-a-thumbnail father frog. But to really get HOPPING here are steps for folding an origami frog. https://www.printablesfairy.com/origami-jumping-frog/ Fold these and send them hopping to measure how far they go. Next, launch STEM action by thinking up ways to make the frogs hop even farther. You could work in teams to test ideas you approve as safe to try. May 16 Love A Tree Day A wonderful read aloud is Survivor Tree by Marcie Colleen (Little Brown Books). And a totally fun book that backs into a love for trees is The Lumberjack’s Beard by Duncan Beedie (Templar). Also special is Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa by Jeanette Winter (Harcourt’s Childrens Books). It’s the biography of an awesome woman whose tree planting inspired a movement that led to more than 30 million new trees being planted for our planet. Finally, don’t miss this site with its NEW YORK CITY TREE ALPHABET https://www.katieholten.com/new-york-city-tree-alphabet Then, as a class, choose a favorite tree native to your area. Investigate to discover ways it’s wonderful. Any chance your class could plant that tree on the school grounds!? May also celebrates International Bird Migration Day. So, visit my blog and let me read my book about a record-setting bird migration to your students-- The Long, Long Journey https://www.blogger.com/blog/post/edit/4364331591520129111/5958531508010253436 That’s a wrap for this school year! I’ll be back in August to help launch the new school year and pack some discovery-fun into every month. But don’t forget there is always more action on Write On!
